Just replaced my Dell 4400 with an Xi i7 running Vista 64bit. Because
the new system's sound output jacks are the same miniplug style as the
old system's, I had assumed that the Harmon Kardon 395 speakers that
came with the Dell would work on the new system. And they do ... sort
of.
These speakers consist of a pair of small stereo speakers that sit on
the desktop plus a large subwoofer that goes under the desk. Not
surprisingly, the subwoofer has a 120v power cord. All three speakers
are driven via a coaxial miniplug color- coded green which plugged into
the green output on the Dell's Soundblaster sound card.
When plugged into the green sound output on the new system's
motherboard, the desktop speakers are recognized by the system and work
fine but the subwoofer fails to respond at all. I know the speaker is
working because it outputs a little noise if manipulate its volume
control. It just doesn't seem to be getting any signal.
A little research on the Dell website indicates that there is a Dell
driver for these speakers for Win XP and earlier, but nothing for Vista.
I am not going to hold my breath waiting for Dell to supply a driver.
Ditto for Harmon Kardon (their website doesn't seem to even recognize
these speakers).
Finally, my questions:
Is there any chance that I'll find a Vista 64 bit driver that will
operate these speakers fully?
Is there chance that the XP driver will work on Vista? ... and if I
try the XP driver, do I risk screwing up the registry or currently
installed drivers?
Is it possible that something else is causing this problem?
Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.
