I'm unable to remove this update from my update list.
817787 (Windows Media Player 7.1)
I've done this update succesfully several times.
But it keeps appearing in the update list.

I am having the same difficulty with the same Windows Media Player 7.1
updates on Windows 98. I've seen this same issue posted a couple of times,
but no solutions offered. Does Microsoft have a fix for this problem? I have
successfully installed and rebooted twice now. The history in Windows
Updates shows successful installation, and still it keeps popping up as a
needed new critical update the next day. There is clearly a software problem
of some sort--my computer is virus-free and operating normally otherwise.
Can anyone help?

To clarify, there are two Windows Media Player 7.1 updates at issue: 817787
and Q320920.

Sorry, I haven't found a solution yet.
Still get the needed new critical update messages.
This kinda defeats the mechanism.

Have you looked at the logs for clues? (assuming logs are generated
on your OS ;o)

Have you tried downloading and installing these manually?

FYI the usual explanation for this type of problem is interference
by "security" apps such as Anti-virus programs which may need to be
temporarily disabled (not just stopped) while you are in an install
phase. That's one of the advantages of doing a manual download
and install--you get to break the update into distinct controllable phases.
