I had tried a similar sequence suggested by "Gary"- uninstalling
Framework 1.1, then DL'ing from Windows Update (along with the
service pack) and installing both. But I got a different exception
error. Deleting the sub-folder seems to do the trick.
I went to MSDN.microsoft.com/netframework as suggested
above. It says the "preview" for the 3 files was over. I DL'd the
1.1 redistribution there & SP1 as you suggested, but when I tried
to install the redistribution, it said I needed v1.1 4322 for it to
install properly.
I finally found an older redistribution package at Microsoft.com
(9th most popular download?) after doing a search for Framework 1.1
there. That package installed properly- and so did SP1 ! So I finally
have SP1 installed, and I'm not informed at Windows Update or by
Critical Updates that I need to get it.
