This is a repeat of a message in another newsgroup to make
it easier for users to locate.

Found a way to get SP1 to install for WIN 98se.

You must do the following:

1. download the NET 1.1 redistribution & SP1 packages from
the NET framwork home page, but do not install.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframework/
2. uninstall NET 1.1
3. delete the framework sub-folder from the
windows\microsoft.net folder
4. install NET 1.1 from step 1.
5. install SP1 from step 1.

This sequence finally worked for me. It appears that there
is something in the sub-folder that is causing the problem
& only unistalling & deleting the folder will clear it up.

Hope this helps everyone.

I had tried a similar sequence suggested by "Gary"- uninstalling
Framework 1.1, then DL'ing from Windows Update (along with the
service pack) and installing both. But I got a different exception
error. Deleting the sub-folder seems to do the trick.

I went to MSDN.microsoft.com/netframework as suggested
above. It says the "preview" for the 3 files was over. I DL'd the
1.1 redistribution there & SP1 as you suggested, but when I tried
to install the redistribution, it said I needed v1.1 4322 for it to
install properly.

I finally found an older redistribution package at Microsoft.com
(9th most popular download?) after doing a search for Framework 1.1
there. That package installed properly- and so did SP1 ! So I finally
have SP1 installed, and I'm not informed at Windows Update or by
Critical Updates that I need to get it.
