A couple of weeks ago, I discovered I had problems downloading Windows
updates. Today I finally had the time to investigate.
Never a problem before for me and I religiously download weekly (manually)
all necessary updates. I also update weekly my AntiVirus (AV) and (free)
AntiSpyware software programs (and requisite definition files). I may be
overly cautious, but I've never had a problem before, updating or otherwise,
knock on wood.
Recently, when I would start IE and try to begin the update process, I'd get
an error message before any necessary update files were presented to select
for downloading.
Not sure whether an update of Windows or an update of my AV caused the
initial problem, but clearly there was a conflict. Doesn't matter now.
Ironically, my AV software would report after a scan that I had
vulnerabilities from not updating Windows.
Thanks to a search of this thread and a post from Alias~-, I got the hint to
shut down my AV software before updating. I did this and tried updating
again. Worked perfectly.
From now on, I'll simply exit (de-activate) my AV (TrendMicro) and use IE to
update Windows manually and then immediately reboot, whether it is suggested
or not. Afterall, I still want my trusted AV loaded and ready to go before I
explore other web destinations.
