Suddenly webcam won't connect in Live Messenger

I have 2009 Windows Live Messenger and I'm using a Microsoft LifeCam VX-1000.
Until a week ago, my webcam opened fine, and everyone could see me. Now
suddenly when I click on "Show Webcam" it starts trying to connect, but then
doesn't connect. But when I click on "Video Call" the webcam works fine and
they can see me fine. So why won't just the webcam function run properly by
itself???

I just downloaded the new version of windows live myself and having a
similar issue. My web cam won't connect at all. When I click on video chat
all I get is two big red X's. My friends web cam nor mine work. They both
worked fine on the old version but not on this one. When I go into my
settings and check I can see myself on cam but they won't connect. We both
have Microsoft LifeCam VX-1000 too. I'm thinking maybe it's not compatiable
with the new version of Windows Live Messenger.
