In my observation, and installing SP2 on four stanalone PC and 2 Laptops
this may help someone:
1. TURN OFF auto updates as your machine may not be ready for the big
download.
2. Order the CD and DON'T download it. Install from the CD. The installer
checks your system and installs only what is needed. On
a big download such as this, there is big chance of corruption on files
not needed.
3. Do a backup, defrag, clear any errors you are buged with. The hope that
SP2 will fix any problems you are having is most likely NOT the case. Turn
off the firewall built into XP and leave off if you have ANY other type
of software
or hardware firewall. I believe that is the problem on downloads that
creats conflicts and it has trouble installing and getting the right files
for your
setup. Only my opinion. Turn off everything running in the
taskbar and install. You will enjoy the pop-ups that are blocked if nothing
more.
Hope this helps.
