When I installed Vista Ultimate onto my Sun Ultra 20 Workstation it did not
have drivers for my audio controller (The default one on an Ultra 20
Workstation) nor could it find them. I went onto sun.com and searched for the
ultra 20 drivers,
I downloaded "Sun Ultra 20 M2 Workstation Tools & Drivers CD 1.6A"
Containing "Sun Ultra 20 M2 Workstation Tools & Drivers CD 1.6A
Image Contents:
* Bios Version 1.45.0
* Graphics, Chipset and Audio Drivers
* Drivers for Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista (NEW!)
* PC-Check Diagnostic Program"

I ran the install for the Vista Audio drivers twice, restarted, nothing. I
opened device manager and had it search in the folder I extracted all the
files to for the audio drivers, Windows said no drivers were found.

This is the only problem I have had with vista, everything else I throw at
it works fine.

What should I do?

Scrtcwlvl,

Contact Sun Support and tell them about your problem. They should have an
answer for you.

I did contact Sun support, I was told "Perhaps ask Microsoft? (It's their OS
that has the issue.)"

Scrtcwlvl,

I have no idea why the correct Vista audio drivers don't install. Perhaps
someone else can suggest a solution for this condition.

If no solution can be found, I can only suggest that you consider replacing
the audio card with a Vista compatible one. Creative (www.usa.creative.com)
has released some Vista compatible sound solutions recently.

I am looking for a possible option that allows me to solve it without
spending a large amount of money, if I had to at all about $20. The sound
controller works on XP Pro x64, but my wireless adapter doesn't. So I am
stuck between XP Pro x64 which has Audio, but no internet, and Vista, which
as internet but no audio.

Scrtcwlvl,

I hear ya. My only other response would be to double check the instructions
that came with the Sun audio driver to make sure you didn't miss something.
I'd think that Sun knows best how to install their own driver. Windows uses
standard installation procedures available to all vendors. Your guess is
just as good as mine as to what is different with your situation. If its the
correct driver it should install using the prescribed procedures for doing so.

Does Sun have a user forum? If it does, you might try posting there for
information about this problem. Or, try using google to search the Internet
for a solution. Someone could have had the problem and solved it, and it's
out there. Who knows.

Scrtcwlvl,

Usually, a driver that you download and unzip includes a setup.exe file.
That's the installer. You launch that file by double clicking it and then it
installs the driver automatically for you. Are you sure you don't have such
a file, or something similar, to install that driver?

Yes... I did, I ran the driver Vista_R159.exe file
(...\Drivers\windows\audio\Vista\Vista_R159.exe), I went through the
installation, and when it finished it said, "Maintenance Complete
InstallShield Wizard has finished performing maintenance operations on
Realtek High Definition Audio Driver.
(-) Yes, I want to restart my computer now.
( ) No, I will restart my computer late.
Remove any disks from their drive, and then click Finish to complete setup."
I selected Yes, and pressed finish, restarted, then logged back in and still
nothing, it still said, "No Audio Output Device Installed"

The 2nd time I attempted to install this driver I used, "Run as
Administrator," same results

Scrtcwlvl,

Very frustrating. Try this: In Device Manager, under Properties for the
sound card, uninstall the device and reboot. The idea is to have Windows
reinstall the device when it reboots and then to set everything right. The
assumption is that the drivers are the correct ones and are there (available)
and that Windows will find and install them, finally, when it finishes the
boot process. Who knows. This step has oftentimes fixed these type
situations. On the other hand, perhaps there's something wrong with those
drivers.
