Hello,
I am getting the following error when attempting to run Windows update on a
MS Windows 2000 SP3 server

Support ID: 0x8DDD1003

When I click trough for Validation, I receive the following:
"Validation is not currently supported for this version of Windows or for
this non-Microsoft operating system." [0x80080206]

Any help is appreciated

You may want to upgrade to SP4 for Windows 2000 and install all the updates
offered after the installation of SP4 from Windows Update.

Thanks for the reply's. I have not tried to install SP4 directly to this
server, however, I am able to run Windows Update successfully from a second
Win2000 SP3 server which leads me to believe that there may be a problem with
the first server which is NOT the result of of it having only SP3 installed.
The whole point of Windows Update is to run on an SP3 box to upgrade it to
SP4 (along with other updates).
The server that I am having trouble with is the PDC, so I am reluctant to
try an SP4 iinstall (from download) until I get to the root of the Windows
Update problem

With Internet Explorer 6 SP1 installed on, true?
Anyhow, that doesn't reflect the fact that SP3 fpor Windows 2000 is
no longer supported.

I have installed SP4 on the server, and as I expected... still not able to
run windows update or microsoft update. I am given the following message
################
Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed
on your computer. To continue:
( ) Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
( ) Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem
################
If I choose the first option, I the files appear to register correctly, but
I am returned to the same error page. Choosing the second option results in
a link to a kb article dealing with "0x800A01AE error." and telling me to
regsiter 7 dll;s manually... when I try this, it appears the dll's register
successfully, but I am still unable to proceed.

Any help is appreciated (and please don't just tell me to install SP4 :-) )
Thanks,
Paul

Hm, have you tried installing WUA (Windows Update Agent) 3.0 already?
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe
Download and *save* the EXE and execute it with parameter /wuforce
afterwards (Start -> Run -> WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce).

I assume you did the other steps mentioned in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910359 already (renaming the "catroot2"
folder and deleting/renaming the "SoftwareDistribution" folder).

Freudi

Thanks for your prompt reply...
I have taken the steps that you outlined, but the problem persists. I
either get the prompt to re-register the DLL's or a "Genuine Windows
Validation" check which fails since I am running Win2k Advanced Server (not
WinXP, etc). Let me know if you need anymore info or have any additional
suggestions.
Thanks,
Paul

Hm, that's true for Auto Update too?

Go to http://winware.org/en/browsertest.php
What's the shown there in the User-Agent line while accessing the
site whith Internet Explorer?

UA is correct:
"Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0; T312461; .NET CLR
1.0.3705)"
I have enabeld autoupdates (download only) but that does not seem to work
either... no errors, but no notice of downloads either. Also, the
secunia.com site is unable to retrieve list of MS updates needed, nor can
MBSA 2.1... I think something is pretty messed up. Note that this server is
at a client of mine which I recently began servicing (about 3 months ago) and
I have not been able to successfully install updates during that time... not
sure if they ever worked or what occurred with the server prior to my
arrival. I am hoping to avoid a wipe/reinstall since this is the PDC at the
client and they are a non-profit with limited budget.
Thanks,
Paul
