our back end is Novell 5

I personally have used Novell, and found some things since with it but over
all Windows Server 2003 is much better. The SUS service is much more
reliable, and faster to deploy patches. Depending how big your network is
changing from Novell to windows may be easy or hard. Check out MS papers on
move from novell, good reading
