svchost.exe crashes when accessing Microsoft Update

This is my sister's PC, but I am at a loss for what could be causing this
error. It started a few weeks ago while accessing the internet via her USB
ADSL modem (DLink DSL-200). She got the following error:

svchost.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x500bd2f3" referenced memory at "0x029d34e8". The
memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

If I clicked OK or CANCEL the internet would no longer respond. If I left
the error on screen, it would be fine. After trying several suggestions I
found on forums around the internet, I was still getting this error, so I
brought it home and plugged it into my Ethernet-based ADLS2+.

The error no longer shows here, until I either try and install IE7 RC1 or
attempt to run Microsoft Update.

I tried disabling Windows Update, as suggested by another post I saw on this
community, rebooted, tried Windows Update again, but still got the same error.

The computer is a custom-built Intel 848P based chipset with a 3.0GHz
Pentium 4 Hyperthreading CPU, 512MB DDR400 RAM, an 80GB Samsung SP0802N Hard
Drive and a Radeon 9550 video card. It has a validated version of Windows XP
Home with SP2 and Office 2003 with SP2. I have always kept up-to-date with
the updates on Microsoft Update, and use AVG Free Antivirus as well as
Microsoft Defender B2 for malware.

Any information that would help would be most appreciated.

Why on earth did you download IE7 when it's in BETA?

If you're not going to offer constructive solutions, please keep your
comments to yourself. IE7 RC1 was NOT installed. By the way, IE7 is no longer
beta, it's now a release client.

IE7 RC1 is a "still" Beta software at Release Candidate level 1.

One should NOT install Beta software on thier computer without fully understanding the
ramifications of their actions and be prepared if something goes wrong.

I also said that IE7 RC1 was NOT installed. These issues started well before
I had even downloaded IE7 RC1. I have been using IE7 since the first public
BETA and I know the ramifications.

Now, are you gentlemen going to offer a solution to this issue, or just
going to continue to grill me for downloading IE7?

I will repeat, I did download IE7 RC1, but it was NOT installed on this
computer. The problems started well before it was downloaded. I downloaded it
to see if the problem was with Internet Explorer 6, and knew IE7 would
probably have more up-to-date files, even if they are not yet a GOLD product.

Let me say again, I did NOT INSTALL IE7 RC1 ON THAT COMPUTER.

Well you did state...

So you tried to compound the problem by installing Beta software which is NOT a good idea.

After the software is updated, I suggest scanning the system in Safe Mode.

I also suggest downloading, installing and updating BHODemon for any Browser Helper Objects
that may be on the PC.

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
