A good virus scanner may help, but just in case it doesn't, then you
can follow these procedures:
- Boot to Safe Mode
- Open an elevated Command Prompt (Start->All Programs->Accessories,
right-click Command Prompt, select Run As Administrator)
- type "SFC /scannow" without the quotes and press enterThis may or may not work in this case. If it doesn't, then do this:
- Boot to Safe Mode
- Press WINKEY+R to open the Run Window
- Type MSCONFIG and press enter
- Disable ALL services, including those of Microsoft, and all startup
programs.
- Restart the computer
- Boot into Safe again, use MSCONFIG to enable each service one at a
time, restarting after each one.
- Repeat step 6 until the error message comes back. The last service
you enabled would be the culprit and needs to be disabled.The above could take several hours to complete, as there are way plenty
services to wade through. I had this issue on a customer's PC some
months ago. Not to scare you off, but the above didn't work so well, and
I ended up having to use RegEdit to locate the problem child:
- Boot to Safe Mode
- Press WINKEY+R to open the Run Window
- Type REGEDIT and press enter
- Navigate to
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft \Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Svchost"
- See the screenshot I've attached. These are all the service being
hosted by SVCHOST.EXE when you start your computer.
- Double-click on each key and append an underscore character to its
values (for example, Dcomlaunch will be changed from "PlugPlay,
DcomLaunch" to "_PlugPlay, _DcomLaunch". DO NOT DELETE OR OTHERWISE
CHANGE ENTRIES SO THAT THEY CANNOT BE RECOVERD.
- When you have changed all the values for the keys as described
above, restart you computer into Safe Mode. (It may get a little funky
because it cannot locate any of the specified services, but thats the
point).
- Go back into RegEdit and remove the underscore from each entry one
at a time, restarting after each one ("_PlugPlay, _DcomLaunch" becomes
"PlugPlay, _DcomLaunch". After restart, it becomes "PlugPlay,
DcomLaunch". Repeat until the problem comes back.
- Whichever value it was that you re-enabled in this fashion would be
the problem child. Place and underscore in front of it and continue
step 8 for all the others.
- If you got the right one, you'll have solved your problem, and the
system should be stable enough to run a complete virus scan in
"Normal" mode.Hope that helps...
