svchost process (for update service) hogs CPU process

One of my "svchost.exe" is eating up 99% of the CPU power and this usually
lasts about 5 minutes after hibernate or startup. I've searched other blogs
and sites and this is a very common problem (i've used process explorer from
sysinternals to diagnose) and I have also applied the following
http://support.microsoft.com/k b/927891 patch but this doesn't make a
difference.

The following thread pretty much outlines my problem:
http://forums.pcworld.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=24877

I wanted to see if others have had the same problem that I have had and that
have also applied all the patches but still see the problem occurring.

The only workaround here is to switch off windows update :-(

Is Windows Defender installed, Deepak ? Which antivirus/security suite/
firewall is installed ?

A temp workaround is to show hidden files, folders, and system files,
stop the AU service, delete the DataStor.edb located in
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore, and then delete the contents of
the WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder, too.

NOTE: Deleting the DataStor.edb also removes the update history that one
sees on the Windows/Microsoft Update sites.

Then restart the AU service.

Hi MowGreen,

I do have Windows Defender isntalled. I do not have any antivirus or
security suite installed (yet!). I have Windows Firewall installed too but
it allows Windows update.

It's a pretty vanila installation which surprises me that I am getting these
problems.

Any suggestions?

Deepak,

Yes, please follow the ones I posted previously ... eg. deleting the
contents of the folders suggested . Although for the life of me there
should be no issues with those folders, go ahead and clear their
contents, please.

I'd suggest that you uninstall WD to see if that resolves the issue, but
then the system would be totally unprotected.
BTW, AOL [don't laugh, please] in conjunction with Kaspersky is offering
a very good AV and it is free:
