We have the hotfix for Server2003 and XP-Pro but we have many laptops with
XP Media Center. The support people simply tell us there is not fix for
Media Center. This problem not only prevents automatic updates but also
pervents manual updates. In serveral cases it caused other errors that
completely corrputed the system and the systems had to be rebuilt.

The worst harm done is the person-hours [ ] spent messing with this
terrible problem.

Can't something be done?

SVCHOST32.EXE? This is not a Windows file, and is a symptom of an infected
and/or compromised machine. This is something several worms use (and some
hackers) in order to make you think it's legitimate (as you're used to
seeing SVCHOST.EXE). Another variant on this them is the use of SVHOST.EXE.

Joe,
There may be such a worm but this is a major bug associated with Windows
Update. We have been working with Microsoft, who has fixes for this bug on
XP and Server2003. It's an acknowledged bug.

I have seen in my task manager about four instances of SVCHOST.EXE. and I
don't know what that is because I am new to computers. After reading these
post my questions are (1) Is this a worm virus. (2) Is it ligitimate and (3)
should I stop this process as it is listed under processes?

SVCHOST.EXE is a Windows file. See svchosts description here:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314056

SVCHOST32.EXE is not.
Malware frequently use names similar to confuse you.

Does the hotfix resolve the issue with Win 2K3 and XP systems, Tina ?
I've heard that it's a hit or miss proposition. AFAIK, the only way, and
it's only temporary, is to delete DataStor.edb in
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore
and to delete all of the contents of
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

NOTE: Deleting the DataStor.edb removes the update history that one sees
when going to either Windows or Microsoft Update.

It appears to have fixed the problem on several server2003 systems. We have
not actually had the problem on XP Pro systems but have it on some XP Media
Center. We have had to simply turn off Windows Update altogether.

I cannot believe Microsoft cannot solve this problem. Microsoft simply says
there "is no fix for media center". I guess that means you have to buy a
MAC or go without updates.

Also, it seems some systems do not have the problem at all.
