I know it sounds like a terribly simple question (I used to be an I
manager)..

But its important for optimizing my new custom game pc

I upgraded an unvalidated XP version to vista (vista upgrades ask yo
to choose 32 or 64 bit during install) and I wanted 64 bit. However
my finger clicked 32 for some reason and away it went like a
unstoppable train

It gave me scary warnings about needing drivers for the hardware so
connected the setup program to the internet

Oh great, it activated windows for my convenience

Can I redo the whole process, installing XP and install vista upgrad
again for 64 bit, or do I need to buy a new vista key

First - 32 bit to 64 bit or 64r bit to 32 bit require "clean Installs".

Second - Since the DVD contains all versions of Vista, atinstallation you
are asked to select the version of Vista you are installing - Important -
you can only install the version for which you have an applicable key.

Then you'd know that it is impossible to "upgrade" from a 32-bit OS to
a 64-bit OS; a clean installation is the only way.

And, as a former IT manager, you naturally knew enough to have had all
of the requisite device drivers available on a CD or DVD before even
attempting any sort of OS upgrade or change.

You could have said "No,' had you been paying attention.

Yes, you can reformat the partition and start again, without buying a
new license for Vista, but, as a former IT manager, you already knew this.

You're just messing with us, aren't you?
