Switching my LiveID

I need to switch the LiveID in my messenger account. I have already linked my
current one to my new one at the Account.live.com site, but can see no way to
simply transfer my account over in Messenger (Vista).

Is this possible, short of exporting all of my contacts, then importing them
in a new account and asking to be everyone's friend again, and setting up all
of my groupings?

Right click on the Messenger icon (on the taskbar). Select "Sign out".

Then, right click on the Messenger icon (on the taskbar) and Select
"Sign in ...".

On the Sign in menu, enter your new LiveID. Check the "Remember me"
box - and sign in again.

Your contacts may not be visible, unless you have imported them into new
LiveID. That is because contacts are stored on a central server at
Microsoft. If your contacts are still on your old Live ID, close
Messenger.

Then, use your browser to sign into your old LiveID (via the webmail
interface at www.hotmail.com).

Click on Options, followed by More Options - and scroll down to
Customize your contacts.

Export your contacts to a CSV file, and save the file on your computer.
Sign out from your old LiveID.

Use your browser to sign into your new Live ID. Import your contacts
from the CSV file. Then, sign out from your new LiveID.

Open Messenger - and sign into your new LiveID. Messenger should
download all of your contacts from the central server.

Greetings Ed,

Just a note, if you're not using an @Hotmail, @Msn, or @Live account for either of these IDs
(new or old), you can actually transfer over your account to the new ID without going through
the whole process that Bob has mentioned, and your contacts would automatically be
transferred over (and their lists would be updated to). Although you would have to close the
new one first and then click the Change button on the accounts site.

Actually, the old is @hotmail. The new is another non-MS account. Will your
process work or do I have to go through the steps Bob had? Will the act of
importing the contacts as Bob said cause all of my friends to get a
notification that I want to add them? Will by groups be preserved?

Hi,

I'm afraid not, they both have to be non-Hotmail accounts for the automagic process to work.
You will unfortunately have to go through that entire export/import process and the groups
will not be preserved either sadly. As well, all your contacts will just be informed that
you've added them to your list and will be prompted to add the new one to their contact list.
