1. Go to HP's website for your model laptop and see if they have drivers for
Vista 64-bit. If they don't, forget it. Don't forget to check for 64-bit
drivers for all your peripherals (printer, scanner, etc.), too. While
32-bit programs can run in Vista 64, all hardware must have 64-bit drivers.

2. If 64-bit drivers are available, then you can upgrade but you should ask
yourself why you really want to do this. To get the most out of a 64-bit
operating system, you need to have programs that are 64-bit and/or that
need the extra RAM. If you just surf the Internet and make Word documents,
there will be no point in adding memory.

3. If drivers are available and you decide you want Vista 64, purchase it
and install it. You can only do a clean install, so back up your data
first.

You will need to back up your personal data and do a clean installation of
Vista Home Premium 64 bit, reinstall your applications and install the
64-bit device drivers for all your hardware including the components for
your laptop. You should be able to obtain these from the manufacturers
website. There is no upgrade path from 32 to 64 bit Vista.

Hmmm, I doubt that, Windows 7 will have a 32 bit version available.

tc,

I updated Ultimate 32 to 64, threw in 8 GB RAM. I got everything I wanted to
work, except 1 3rd party utility I had been using. A quick Google search and
I found a 64 bit version that worked. I now have a very solid OS. I am glad
I did it.
Good Luck.

Windows 7 has both the 32 and 64 bit versions. I think the ''general
opinion", as far as I can tell, is that the 32 bit OS is now, the 64 bit is
the future. I have both versions of Vista installed, using the 64 bit
version as my main OS.

As the saying goes.....to each his own...it is good to have choices.........
:-)

Tomorrow never comes.

Where's my flying car? Where the hardware physics engine on
my graphics card? Why is a unix command line still the most efficient way
to do batch programming?

Yeah yeah windows 7 12GB ram lol I'll believe it when I boot it.

I think this is all silly. With access to hard drives and silicon drives so
fast, why does anyone need more memory for more apps to be open.

More memory is needed ONLY for data intensive apps...NOT for more apps.

64 bit, except for certain scientific and graphic work, is nonsense.
Further, it has been available from Silicon Graphics for desktops for almost
20 years.

Thanks Bob Campbell

I checked my drivers, I can get all 64bit drivers from HP site. But no
sute about my other applications,
I am a final year Bsc Student. and I need to use
-MS visual Studio 2005/2008,
-MS virtual PC or Sun VM or VM ware. ( in this application i need t
run 32 bit win server 2003 and xp pro, i need to use this app till
pass the MCSE )
-Packet tracer 5 / Dinamps ( its for my CCNA practice

thats all now, these are the important applications for me, at th
moment

----
And you said that i can use 8GB ram.
Can I use 8GB ram in 32bit vista
the shop guys told me, dat I cant put 4 GB, cos its 32bit

first I ask this laptop with 4GB ram. they said , "they can put 4GB
but windows will show 3GB only. but BIOS will show the full 4GB. if
need to use 4GB or more, I need to put any 64bit OS"
so, I ignore that offer an got this laptop with the default hardwar
components

Thats why I start this thread,

but if i can use more Ram on 32bit, then i dont need a 64bit os, and
can use my default applications without any trouble

and could anyone answer me, pls..
what is the maximum RAM capacity that Vista Home premium can manage
32bit os )
