Vista Home Premium.
I have never used Norton or Symantec. I have deleted every Symantec and
Norton file I could find on my PC. Now when I start Media Center I get this
annoying message "The Sym Addln program has stopped responding and you will
be returned to Media Center". I click on the OK button and Media Center
works fine.

How can I get rid of this annoyance?

Backup registry before you delete stuff.

Search in the registry for it, then delete the key.

Thanks Carl,
I failed to mention that I also deleted everything I could find in the
registry.
Please let me know if you have any other ideas.

There's a giant contradiction in those last two sentences. If you've
never used anything Norton or Symantec, there would be nothing Norton
or Symantec to delete.

Download and run the appropriate Norton removal tool;

More than likely it came with his computer and he
hasn't used it or never used it in the past on other
computers.

You need to go to their websites and get their cleaners.
I had the same problem a year ago and finally got their tech support to tell
me that they do have a cleaner to rid the PC of all traces.
I downloaded it, ran it and all was fixed.

Bob,

I have searched all over the web for references to this item and could
find nothing. I also searched for it on Norton's support website with no
results. This leads me to believe it has nothing to do with Norton/Symantec.

I do know that SYM can be related to Symmetric Power, such as in
mathematics and/or linear algebra, and it can be used as a prefix to mean
with or together. Of course, it is also used as an abbreviation for Symbol.

Which edition of Vista are you using? Is it the version marketed in
America, Europe, Asia or some other region? I only ask this because who
knows what is placed in editions other than the American edition.

In these discussion groups it is sometimes used in place of Shut Your
Mouth or Speak Your Mind. I can't really give you any advice because I don't
know the answer and can't find the answer.

Have a nice day.

C.B.

Thanks for your efforts C.B. I'm in the U.S.

I'm assuming Sym Addln is related to Symantec because the popup began to
appear after I deleted all references to Symantec on my PC.

I did another search of my registry (thanks Carl) and there are many more
Symantec keys that I missed the first time. Hopefully the popup will no
longer appear after I delete the keys.
