Symantec: Norton Antivirus 2007

Installed Vista over XP. Followed upgrade instructions and
uninstalled Symantec: Norton Antivirus 2007 and several other
programs. During Norton uninstall, Symantec gave me a product key
(same as the one in the original Norton box) saying that the key would
be required to reinstall Norton.

Reinstalled Norton, followed on screen instructions including entering
the product key. Got message that product key was invalid because it
was installed on another machine. Contacted Symantec and their
solution is to fill out a form, print it out, and mail the completed
form with original Norton dist and all of my proof of purchase
documents.

Has anyone else experienced this problem with Symantec? Is there a
solution better than mailing all that stuff and waiting three weeks or
more for a new Vista compatible disk?

The only way you can eliminate Norton from your system is to do a complete
reinstall. Reformat your hard drive and do a CLEAN install of your Vista OS.
Once installed, do not reinstall your Norton security software.
Norton/Symantec is not compatible with Vista, regardless of what Norton tells
you. Their customer service and technical service is absolutely terrible. I
have used many, many Norton software products and found them all to be
incompatible and resource hogs. This information is based solely on my own
experiences with Norton.

TBH, I haven't allowed a Norton product on my system since Symantec bought
them.
I'd uninstall, use any cleaner tools they offer, & never look back.
There are too many things that work as well or better, and don't make
themselves nearly uninstallable to boot.

Uninstall as much of Norton as you can. There will always be a couple of
files on your hard drive which you are denied access to by Symantec!

Then go to www.avast.com and download their free home version.

It is better than ANY of the paid for anti-viruses.

Have a look here, the link is compliments of a Bruce Chambers' post in another thread. Even though XP was used, the tests for different possible infections would not be significantly different for Vista. Not all function in Vista

Avast is a fine free alternative, better than 'any' paid Vista compatible ? Debatable.
