Synaptics Pointing Device

Hi,
Have an HP9740, just a few months old, with Vista Home Premium. On start-up
I sometimes get a message that the SPD has ceased to function and the prog.
will close. The pad continues to work, but not the scroll function.
Re-starting restores it, but it will often fail again. At other times it
works fine. Would be very grateful for any ideas as to what is wrong. It
first happened around the time I was installing a codec pack, WinRar, Veoh
and the like. Could this have interfered with the Synapics device?
I know I can use the arrows to scroll, but I find this failure very
annoying.
Would be grateful for any help, but must point out that I am largely
clueless when it comes to the technical aspects of computers.

Yes, software that you think has nothing to do with other software can
impact the other software. I'm not saying this is your case, but certainly
it can happen.

Go to HP's tech support website (Downloads and Drivers) for your specific
model computer and download the drivers for the Synaptics touchpad. Install
them and see if that solves the issue. If it doesn't, then a call to HP
tech support might be in order. Or post back with what happens after you
install the drivers. Make sure to include the exact text of any error
messages.

Hi, and thanks for taking the trouble to reply. Will try what you suggest.
Had thought along those lines after reading similar posts here, but was a bit
wary in case I had to uninstall what is already there and then ended up with
nothing! From experience, operations that sound simple in practice often end
up giving novices like me all sorts of unexpected problems and headaches!
