Sync with Exchange client possible?

1. Must activesync synchronize directly with Exchange Server on our SBS or
can it sync with an Exchange client (laptop) that in turn syncs
periodically?

2. Does Sprint/PPC 6700 activesync with server over their network require
additional data services beyond the basic call package? No one at Sprint
was sure when I bought the phone. If so I'll have to hire someone to set it
up. Hence the alternate client Outlook sync.

You can do so, but only via USB/Bluetooth. You cannot synchronize back
to the laptop over the network. You can do this by just setting a
local sync only (don't set up the Exchange server, only the Outlook
stuff). Also note you cannot set the sync period - you can only do so
manually (either by connecting to USB, or telling it to sync over
Bluetooth).

You'll need a data package - I'm not familiar with Sprint's plans, but
you will need access to their 1x/EVDO network.

Thanks for your help.

Restating:

1. No sync back over network means that I cannot sync via the wireless
network connection from phone to the laptop. It must be by bluetooth or
usb.

2. A local bluetooth sync can't be done by setting a sync period. This
means that I cannot have it sync on 'bluetooth connect' automatically, and
then say every 30 minutes? I have to initiate each sync (over bluetooth
say) manually.

Question:

Since the phone can be a broadband modem for the laptop, can't I first sync
the laptop to Exchange Server via our vpn? If so, then I can then local
bluetooth sync the phone and save the data package fee.

That assumes the broadband modem doesn't require a data package plan. When
buying, I was told that only high bandwidth use required a plan.

Correct on both.

Yes, you can sync via the laptop.
