Sync not working although it reports that it is!

I'm using an HP iPAQ hx4700 running WM2003SE, and just "upgraded" my PC to
Vista Ultimate 64-bit. About a third of the time, I can synchronize just
fine using the Windows Mobile Device Center, but the rest of the time Sync
Center is still reporting that it synced successfully, yet Calendar and
Contacts have NOT been synced between the PDA and the desktop! I'm not
getting any errors, and am seeing the little blue checkmark on the Sync icon.
I've also doublechecked that Calendar and Contacts are indeed set to be
synced in the WMDC. Yet they aren't actually being synced!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you installed the latest version of WMDC version 6.1:

Also, try resetting the device and sync again.

Yes, I do have v6.1, and have already tried multiple PDA & desktop resets.
