"Sync. Out of Range" displays after installing updates

Running WinXP Professional (SP2). After the latest updates, upon reboot, the
regular Windows XP screen appears, and then a black screen with the message
"Sync. Out of Range" in a box floating around my monitor. (It looks more
like a monitor message than a windows message, but the monitor controls did
not affect in one way or another.)
After doing a hard shutdown and restarting with last known good
configuration, everything runs fine, but the Windows Upate page still lists
those updates that produce the strange aforementioned error.
Has anyone else come across this?

The Updates in question are as follows:

Update for Windows XP (KB894391)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB885250)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB885835)
Update for Windows XP (KB887742)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB888302)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB888113)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB873333)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB873339)
Critical Update for Windows XP (KB886185)

as well as one without a KB number:
"Microsoft Corporation - Video - NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420"

....I suppose the next troubleshooting step should be to install them one by
one and see which one is the culprit. I'll probably try that next, unless
someone else has seen this error or has some other brilliant idea.

Thanks much.

Well, I installed them one, or sometimes a few, at a time, with reboots
inbetween each, and wouldn't you know, the error didn't reappear.

Sorta makes me feel silly for bringing it up, but in case anyone else ever
searches this forum for the same error, the order in which I installed the
updates was:
1. "Microsoft Corporation - Video - NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420"
2. Critical Update for Windows XP (KB886185)
3. Security Update for Windows XP (KB888302)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB888113)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB873333)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB873339)
4. Security Update for Windows XP (KB885250)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB885835)
5. Update for Windows XP (KB887742)
6. Update for Windows XP (KB894391)

Problem solved...somehow. I hope this helps someone else someday...

Clear cut monitor issue with that error.

Nice work, Charlie. I'd bet installing the Video adapter driver first
was the solution. And thanks for sharing your findings
