which version of Exc?

Exc2K u need to install Mobile Server.

Exc2K3, u need to open http or https for the sync at the firewall and
OWA/OMA running. Just type in the web address or IP without the "http://"
or ending subdirectory.

u should only need to put in the server name in the server tab in the
ActiveSync then.

I am having problems with this too (as int_spy can attest) so I'll be
anxious to see if you can get it working.
My issue, after I resolved conection problems, is that it says I am not
allowed to synch remotely. I am clearly enabled to do so in AD users and
computers (and I'm a domain admin) so I'm not sure if it is an error with
asp.net permissions or what.
Keep us posted on your success.
