The System Cannot Find the File Specified

After successfully upgrading to SP2 I cannot upgrade any of my device
drivers anymore.

Whether I try the update from Windowsupdate or manually from my disk
with
an installer (or 'Update Driver' via Device Manager) makes no
difference.

Every single time the install fails with Hardware Update wizard saying:

"Cannot Install this hardware

There was a problem installing this hardware

An error occured during the installation of the device

The system Cannot find the file specified."

I first had this problem with Silicon Image SIL 3112 SATA controller
that had a new driver update on WU site.

I tried upgrading it and it failed.

After that, the device had a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager.

No amount of installing, removing, updating driver, removing device
in safe mode helped at all.

The device remains "Drivers for this device are not installed (code
28)".

There is nothing wrong with my driver install files. They install
perfectly
fine on other XP machines.

Now I have the exact same symptoms with my graphics driver (Radeon X800)
and my "nVidia nForce PCI System Management" System device.

The driver updates fail and the devices remain with a yellow question
mark
and code 28.

I'm at complete loss at what to do (except reformat and re-install,
which
with my intricate software setup is more than 3 days of full work and as
such not very tempting).

Any ideas?

I have googled, searched MS knowledgebase and tried everything I can
think of.

Before SP2 I had never problems like these.

An example part from setupapi.log (last install I tried for the "nVidia
nForce PCI system management" device) reads:

#I054 Interfaces installed.
#-166 Device install function: DIF_INSTALLDEVICE.
#I123 Doing full install of "PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_00D4&SUBSYS_A5501297
&REV_A4\3&13C0B0C5&0&09".
#E122 Device install failed. Error 2: The system cannot find the file
specified.
#E157 Default installer failed. Error 2: The system cannot find the file
specified.
#I060 Set selected driver.
#I125 Installing NULL driver for "PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_00D4&SUBSYS_A5501297
&REV_A4\3&13C0B0C5&0&09".
#E122 Device install failed. Error 2: The system cannot find the file
specified.

I'm running an Athlon 64 system with 1 GB of ram, no memory issues, no
overclocking, all WHQL drivers and no apparent system problems before
this update issue.

Moi Pasi

I noticed You are running on serial ATA hard drives (2 at least)? I cannot
tell weather You have set up a RAID 0 or 1 array, but I do known running a
SATA controller without 2 similar HDD's set-up as a RAID array may cause such
a problem?
