System crashes after recommended updates

It's done this to me twice now. First time I accepted all, the second time I
took only the recommended and important options. However, each time is the
same result, it crashes after the reboot and I have to try to restore the
setting (has started after running the autofix twice and it telling me it
can't sort the problems automatically).

I now have a total of 17 updates that it wants to install and I can't log
off the system without it automatically trying to upload them when I do so.

Driving me nuts.

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1) when
posting to this newsgroup.

Vista SP1 - Please note: me and computers are like me and cars. I know how to
drive them but haven't got a clue how the engines work.

Bet you're now glad you answered my plea.... )

How recently was Vista SP1 installed? Did you install it via Windows Update
or manually?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed Vista SP1?
