I did a hard install of SP1 over two hours ago on my desktop. The system
installed and configured updates-went up to 100%..however...it is still
hanging-what I mean by that is I am still on the blue installation screen and
it says "Configuring Updates-do not turn off computer" I am not sure what to
do...should I just shut it off and restart?

NO! Mine was hanging at the same spot and I shut off my pc---I have to turn
the power off after waiting over 3 hours. Now my pc is no good I have to take
it to the shop. My pc will no longer boot up. It won't even boot the recovery
disks.

As Carey Frisch [MVP] has pointed out, you're supposed to just sit there an
WAIT. If you wait long enough, Windows 7 might be released and you can then
try "updating" to that. :-)

PS. I warned that this NG would be flooded with questions about SP1 problems
when it entered the channel. You are not alone by the looks of things
around here. :-)

Cheers.

My note book locked up also after installing Vista SP1. I run Startup Repair
but it says it "cannot repair this computer automatically". I try a System
Restore to prior to SP1 but it just locks up on me. What I haven't tried is a
Complete PC Restore (I don't want to loose all the programs that I have
installed, luckily I don't have much data in the hard drive) nor done
anything in the Command Prompt Window. Any suggestions?????

Install a temporary new Vista, once new version has booted (don't
allow it to authenticate), collect the latest drivers for the
machine, then change the wiring back to the old installed version
(rename the Windows folder etc.), then re-install or update all the
drivers, probably starting with the chipset ones. Re-boot (with
fingers crossed).

You probably need to change the boot order in the BIOS setup, before
windows tries to boot. If set to boot from the CD first, the machine
doesn't know about vista, just about the CD.
