system hangs at "Checking for the latest version..."

I have tried all the fixes shown in posting of 01/21/05 from Larry889
(replied by Patti McLeod) with no luck (including hijack this). This is the
last text from the WU log. Note that I CAN update usign automatic updates,
but these appear to be critical only, so I cannot get to the optional ones.


2005-01-28 21:43:00-0500 3732 e10 Out of proc datastore is shutting down
2005-01-28 21:43:01-0500 3732 e10 Out of proc datastore is now inactive

Any help is appreciated.

Those messages don't indicate a hang in WU.
In fact, they could have come from AU.

A hang would be indicated by a much earlier timestamp
on a message which contained

<example>
Trying to make out of proc datastore active
</example>

and then nothing until signs of user intervention
