I have automatic updates install - recommended by Microsoft. The update
downloaded and installed and message came up that I need to reboot or wait
till later. I said later. A timer window came up three more times over the
past three hours and I said wait. I went down for a cup of coffee and my
system was rebooting. It did not save any files, nothing. No request for
me to save work. NOTHING. Now I have 4 hours of work to recover in one
hour. WHO DO I SEND THE BILL TO!

Then next time you will remember to reboot when you are asked - don't just
leave it until you decide to do it a few hours later - there are enough
probs with updates as it is - why shorten the odds on a successful update.
You have leant two lessons today, then.
And you want someone to pay for your tardiness. :-) :-)

I agree that I should have resaved my work. But why does an open Word
document with document save setting to 3 minutes not save a document?

Biggest lesson is that you don't leave a machine in automatic update mode.
You don't have any control. In the past, it would wait for you to agree to
reboot, not just take over and do it without saving data.

It might have done that but the update reboot kicked-in as soon as it saw
you had left your computer unattended ;-)

Set Auto to inform you but choose your own time etc to download and
install - I didnt think anyone let MS do the whole lot on its own
unsupervised.
But I assume that the updates all downloaded and installed OK - which is a
result in itself, these days.

Once updates are installed, it is important to reboot as soon as possible.
IMO, three hours is far to long.
Updates requiring a reboot should not be considered installed until after
the reboot.
The true status of the update before a reboot is unknown at best.

You send the bill to yourself.
It can be annoying to continually get that message and have to continue to
ask it to wait.
But after 3 warnings, I am surprised you left knowing you could expect
another at any time.
At the very least whenever I leave I normally save.

As for why the Office documents did not save, ask in an Office newsgroup:
http://aumha.org/nntp.htm

You can also change your Windows Update settings:
Right click My Computer
Click Properties
Windows Update tab

As antioch has already pointed out, set AU to " Notify me ... " so that
you control when the updates are downloaded and installed when *you*
want them to install.
And, to change the prompt to reboot the system:
http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000294.html

Please remember, when an update that is installed needs to restart the
system that means that the files are in a mismatched state. If it was a
Critical Security update for an active exploit that is "going around"
the system is *still vulnerable* to said exploit until the system is
rebooted.
