My my Vista Ultimate Inspiron 1521 laptop reboots when I try to install an OS
on Virtual PC. I purchased Vista Ultimate because I need to run legacy
programs on a virtual instance of XP for my business. I have tried
everything that I can think of to make it work with no success including the
following:

- Uninstall and reinstall Virtual PC 2007.
- Start Vista in safe mode (I found that Virtual PC 2007 will not run in
safe mode).
- Turn off the firewall and try to install.
- Install an older version of XP (SP1). This got further than the SP2
version but still resulted in a reboot of Vista.
- Install from an ISO image instead of the CD.
- Tried to install Windows 2000 (same result).
- Called Dell's fee-based on call at 866-497-2661. They just blew me off and
said they do not support Virtual PC 2007.

I have seen another post on the Dell forum where another user is having the
same problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Is there an error message or stop error (blue screen)?
Are there any clues in the Event Viewer?
Does it happen at a point of setup in the VM where it would reboot to
continue?

Hi Rick,

Thanks for responding. On one of my many tries, I did see a blue screen
flash very briefly before the system re-booted but it happened too fast to be
able to see anything. I am new to Vista so I do not know to check the error
logs. Can you help me with this?

Thanks,
Marc

Rick - I found a program called VirtualBox that seems to be a lot like
Virtual Machine. I have installed it and it is working. I think that I will
uninstall Virtual Machine 2007. Thanks for your help with this.
