System Resore is verrry slow

I'm running Vista 64 Ultimate (retail version) on a ASUS P5Q Pro with an
Intel quad-core processer with 8Gb ram and multiple hard drives. After 2
weeks the System Restore system app is running extremely slow. I was
trying to create a restore point before messing with the Registry. At
first I thought it would not run at all but when you attempt to start
the app a second time it errors out because the wizard is already
running. If I check with Task Manager the rstrui.exe is indeed running.

Ran all included diagnostics and found nothing out of the ordinary.
Memory tested clean too.

I started the system restore app last night at 7pm and then did not
access anything on the computer and waited (running Avast personal and
disabled this as well, ran MalWareBytes and found a clean system). At 9
pm the application window finally popped up and reported it was scanning
for hard drives (I have 4 ... 2 configured as seperate drives, C and F
and the other 2 are dynamically linked as Z ... 2.6Tb total). Went to
bed. At 6 am the drives were reported correctly and I selected the C
drive only and clicked on the create a restore point. I left this as it
was because I had to go to work ... will find out tonight how long this
process actually took.

Anyone having similar issues? Anyone know of the cure?

Hi Ron and welcome to the Vista Forums arty:

First let me say this is not a fix but a possible cause of your
problems as I see it.

I have found that the System restore does take longer and longer to
appear when called. I believe this is due to the fact that the data to
be read is very large ( 15% of drive space by default and points
retained for 90 days), although my delays are measured in minutes at
most not hours. have a look at the article, which discusses managing the
process.

'Windows Vista System Restore Guide'

It may be that you have some form of corruption on one of the restore
points which is causing the problem, if that is the case then a reset of
the system (and removal of the old points) may solve it.

as I said not a cure but the article will hopefully provide clues for
diagnosis

keep us informed of progress

I don't know how well this is known but, To empty the System Restore
cache. Just turn SR off and back on.
I have a 320 gig HHD I do not need 5 gigs of space for system restore I
changed the size as per the tutorial on this forum. ( thanks BRINK)

Thank you all for your suggestions ... while trying to clear the Syste
Restore cache was taking 5 hours in itself I decided that a clea
install would probably be my best bet. I did this and discovered I stil
had the exact same issue. This left me with but one option

I originally had installed the OS and used PC Mover to install/move th
applications (of which I have many) and documents and settings. Thi
process actually took 40 hours to somplete. Everything was moved. Thi
was, in hindsight, a mistake. I then formatted the hard drive the O
resides on and reinstalled Vista from scratch

Voilla! All fixed. I'll remember this costly mistake the next time
try to take a shortcut

Hi Ron

May be a good idea to install all vista updates and SP1 and image th
drive before you install your apps and settings , to have a goo
fall-back position - hopefully never needed but usefull to have. whe
you have all your apps etc loaded another image could then be a goo
working backup - again hopefully never neede
