Here is the fix for this problem. I found a link from some where in this
newsgroup, but I can't find it again.

I don't know why this is happening, but after the auto update on 4/14/2005
my system would reboot just before the windows xp login. To get my system
backup I had to use recovery console and run the spuninst batch for this
update. After that my system booted up fine. Here is reference to this fix.
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;825062
I know it is for windows 2000, but it works for xp too.

Like is said, I'm not sure the reason this is happening, but there are a lot
of people posting this same problem.

I'm running Windows XP SP2 on a Athlon 1ghz.

BTW
The other updates that were installed with this update are giving me
problems too. The main thing I noticed was the TCP/IP stack failed. (No
network access) So I uninstalled them all from Add/remove programs.
Here they are:
kb890923
kb893066
kb893086

Hi MrDarin,

Thank you for posting the fix that you found, as I'm sure it will help many
who encounter the restart loop after installing an update :-)

As to the problem you have/had with the TCP/IP stack (no network access),
have you resolved that problem? If not, perhaps the information in this MSKB
article will help you resolve the problem:

"After you run Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta), you have
network-related problems, or you receive an error message"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892350

another option would be to d/load and run winsockxpfix:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

Hi Patty,

RE: TCP/IP problem
It was fixed when I uninstalled the other updates listed below. I'm not sure
which one was the cause.

As for why these updates are causing these problems, I don't have enough
data to figure that out. I'm just glad there is an option to remove these
updates in recovery console. Now, if Microsoft could just give us access to
restore points in recovery console. :-) Although, that would might cut into
the repair side of my business.

I'm not sure what to do about these updates now. I'm sure future updates
will be effected, if I don't install these problem updates.

Please let me know, if you hear of fix for this. I hope Microsoft is aware
and working on this.
