Yes, with the assistance of programs like Acronis True Image, you can make
an image of your HD and store it for use when needed.

Best program would be Acronis True Image.
Vista Business and Ultimate has a System Backup as well.

Probably. Almost all retail laptops come with either a recovery
partition/recovery disk(s) or a program that will burn such disks for you.
Take a look in the manual, or on the manufacturer's support pages for
detailed instructions.

Yup, create fresh images at any major update - you never know when you need
to go back at a fresh one; in fact, should be a standard procedure against
malware. Ideally, you should save on a second HDD installed in your machine.
Moreover, you can mount and explore the images to retrieve whatever you
need... forget the Vista Backup stuff.

Acronis True Image must be purchased. It is the best all-around
program for doing backups that you can buy. It will backup your
entire system, or just the data that you want backed up. It will do
it manually or on a schedule.

Best price is at Newegg.com and it has free shipping.

What you do with it after you buy it is your business. I have it
installed on my big (tower) computer and my laptop.

While you're at Newegg, buy an external USB hard drive. The biggest
you can afford. And only shop those that have free shipping ;-)

I use Norton Ghost to image my drive nightly onto a shared fileserver (my
old machine) that I keep in the closet for backups and media like photos,
videos, etc.
