Will system Restore cancel my updates?

I notice that when I do a system restore to an earlier date, some of
my recently installed programs don't work or are gone from my program
list. I then need to reinstall them.

So, I'm wondering, are my Windows Updates still active if I restore to
a time before they were installed?

Also, is there a way to download and install Windows Updates
individually? This would have been handy since downloading and
installing all at once is a long process for us dial-up people.

System restore will cancel the INSTALLATION of your (post restore point)
updates but not the file DOWNLOADING itself.
If you try Winupdate after restore you will see that the (removed ) updates
are "downloaded and ready to be installed" ! Sounds logical in one sense.
I do not know where Windows hides those downloads but who cares if they are
small... )

I leave to other people for the second part of your question.

You can manually download various security updates and other software from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads however if you do it this way you will
have to manually work out what you need to download yourself.

Alternatively, perform the first part of the windows update process which
will give you a list of updates you require. Then make a note of the
"KBxxxxx" code next to each update and google for that knowledgebase code.
One of the first items google will return is a link to the download for that
update on the Microsoft website.
