System Restore Error - vista home premium

This is a new pc - preloaded with vista home premium.
I've had the pc a couple weeks and every time i've tried to restore my
system to an earlier point, It does its thing... then after re-boot, it
says...

Encountered an Error
Unable to restore to previous state

It doesn't seem to matter what type of restore point i use. I have a large
HD and have the restore options set correctly...
Also, it does seem to restore some things, so i'm not sure what the error
message is about. (For example, the windows updates that were recently
installed, are no longer installed)

If the points are no good, turn off sys restore, restart, and turn it back
on, and test restore.

If using Norton, disable it before using SR.
