system restore fails

windows media player began failing after my last vista update.
A member of another forum suggested trying a "SYSTEM RESTORE".
"SYSTEM RESTORE" ran for half and hour and then reported that
it also failed.

Where are the best instructions for trouble shooting and
configuring "SYSTEM RESTORE"...?

I know this: Norton Internet Security (NIS) can block system restore - it
protects itself too well :-(

The workaround:
Open NIS
-> Computer Settings
-> Misc
-> Turn OFF Product Security Tamper Protection

Turn it back on after success.

NIS is weird about its definitions at first after a system restore.
