Have new HP 9000 notebook with Vista Media Edition. Ran a couple early
restore points. Each time seems to be working fine until near the end when
the error message "System Restore did not complete successfully. Your
computer system file and settings were not changed. Detail: unspecified
error occurred during System Restore"

Any suggestions on how to fix?

If you are willing to generate a log file and email it to me, I can ask the
System Restore team to look at this.

Here are the instructions for generating the log file. Please mail the file
to me minus "online" in my address.

Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Asr,
create a new key called LogFileSetting

Under LogFileSetting, create a new DWORD value called EnableLogging.
Right-click that value, click Modify, and then enter 00000001 (hexadecimal)
or 1 (decimal)

Under LogFileSetting, create a new String value called LogPathName.
Right-click that value, click Modify, and then enter C:\asr.log.

Next, reproduce the error. You should have a file called asr.log under c:\.
Please email this log file to me.

I have the exact same problem. Has a remedy been determined?

No, I never received any log files for further troubleshooting.

Jill,
I was having a problems installing (and uninstalling) Quicken as well as the
Restore issue. I downloaded Vista Manager by Yamicsoft to try for the Quicken
fix. It worked, Vista Manager cleaned up my system and I was able to load
Quicken!

I then created a test Restore point and did a Restore-- it worked! My issue
is resolved. It looked like Yamicsofts product cleaned up the registry of
some items that I could not find.

I wish I had run a log before the apparent fix. I think the issue could be
duplicated by loading Quicken, allowing it to load updates; where upon
Quicken fails and corrupts the registry. The Restore then wll not work and
Quicken will not install or uninstall.

Thanks

I'm also expierencing problems with system restore. I'm running Vista
Premiun edition on an Acer aspire desktop. I've tried several times to reset
the registry using differen system restore points. I equally get the same
error message "System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer
system files and settings were not changed. Detail: unspecified error
occurred during System Restore" .
I'll try to send a logfile to Jilll Zoeller
