System Restore help?

My husband did something to the sound card or the program that creates sound
on my computer. The computer thinks it no longer has a sound device. I wanted
to restore to the point before he did this but it was a few months ago. When
i try to do a system restore to that date it wont let me go back that far. I
am not sure how to do this? Is there a way to restore windows to the orignal?
I bought the computer with windows vista on it so i do not have a backup disk
for windows it jsut came with it, but is there a way i can still re-install
it. Will that solve my problem?

Go to the manufactures site and download drivers for the sound card. You
said you bought the computer without a backup disk. It may have a backup
partition. Usually is drive D:. Se if there is one or if there is an
option to do a recovery disk off the menu.

If not, contact the manufacturer of the computer and see if they can send
you a DVD.

You should have a Recovery Partition on your Hard drive to take your computer
back to the factory standard.
Read either a manual that came with your computer, or go to the
Manufacturers' website, or ring them, to find out how to make the recovery
disk for your make and model.

Also, at Startup/power on, there should be an message at bottom of screen,
saying what F key to hit to start Recovery option.

Back up all data before doing this, as it all be lost in the process.

The ITD sound update did that to many people.
I removed the soundcard from device manager and let windows find it again
instead of allowing it to install the new driver, I directed it to the
restore drive and it installed the original driver instead of the new one.

This sounds like the problem caused by the update provided by Microsoft on
5/1. If you automatically or manually installed that update: Reboot the
computer in safe mode and the go to system restore and select a restore
point prior to 5/1.

all you need to do is go into device manager & roll the driver back - that
solved it for me,

Some reports say that did not work. On my computer, the update prevented me
from starting Control Panel from the start menu. From Windows Explorer I
was able to access Control panel and Windows Update but Windows Update would
not allow the uninstall of the update. The solution was system restore.
The update caused more problems than just the sound driver but it did not
affect everyone in the same manner.
