System restore not creating daily points

Hello everyone -

I have searched elsewhere in vain for an answer to this problem with
due diligence, so now I turn to this august body...

I have an HP Paviliion laptop with Vista Home Premium (original,
non-SP1) on a 160 GB HD. I decided to inspect my System Restore points
for the first time since purchasing this system, and was suprised to
discover that there were no restore points listed.

Not being an expert on Vista's implementation of System Restore, I did
some research on line and found the following:

- no "view older than 5 day" button
- 7 gigs available to shadow copies, 300 MB allocated, 46 MB used
- I can create points manually
- the Task Scheduler has an entry to run TS daily @ 12:00 AM
- perusal of Event View entries shows that TS seems to run at the
scheduled time, but...no points

Thanks in advance for any help...

Mike

System restore doesn't create daily restore points as far as I know.

Hi

You might like to check out this excellent tutorial , see Step 12

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/16...t-schedule.htm

You might check what points you have , eg if you have one for yesterda
, the day before etc. it may be deleting the old ones before the norma
default time - as I recall the default setting for this is 90 days

Hope it help

Here's a news flash for you: it does. Always has, when it's working
properly.

Here's a news flash for you. What good does that do the OP?

Damn you MS fanboys are clueless clowns.

General help:

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...01033.mspx#EDG

If working correctly system restore should make daily reset points and
also when some event happens like when a new driver gets installed and
sometimes some updates and when you install new software. The idea
being if something goes wrong you can roll back to a time when things
were working.

What to you see if you type in system restore when clicking on the
Start Orb and typing that in the search box and clicking on the link
that comes up?

Example for me I see 9/18/2008 11:13:08 Installed Windows Update, so
there is a reset point at that time. Clicking on Open System
Protection should bring up the System Properties window. Click choose
a different restore point then next. Now you should see a list of the
restore points available. Do you? Click cancel.

How many restore points you see depends on how much space is set
aside. If you have little room set for system restore all but the last
one or two may get overwritten. If you see nothing in the above steps
you probably have this feature turned off.

How long do you leave your computer on? If you have only short
sessions and always turn it off when finished, the system might not be
able to find an appropriate time to set one.

I've always left my computers on 24x7 - for the last 15 years anyway.

Leave it on for a couple days and see what happens.

I read the article that you linked to, and verified that there is a
daily scheduled system restore event. I checked the system event viewer,
and it shows that System Restore is being invoked.

There are -no- restore points visible, except for a test point that I
created manually. None. There is only 46 MB used in restore point
storage, so I doubt that they are hidden.

If only 46mb are used, then you don't even have the manual restore
point, or you're looking in the wrong place to find the usage.

Vista restore points are usually 300mb or larger.
