System Restore not functioning

This is a brand new machine running Vista Home Premium. I've installed
three or four programs, had problems with one of them so uninstalled it. I
wanted to see what was available in System Restore and when I run it System
Restore window says "System restore does not appear to be functioning
correctly on this system. Incompatible version of the serializing package.
(0x80070724)". Back and Next buttons are grayed out and the only button
available is Cancel.

This on a new machine with Vista preinstalled and only been running for a
couple of hours! Is there anything I can do to get System Restore to work?

If it is only 2 hours old, take it back under Warranty.

What did you install?
Some security programs break System Restore.

I uninstalled a trial anti-virus program that came preinstalled with the
machine and installed an accounting and a payroll program. Payroll did not
work properly so I uninstalled and then reinstalled and its ok now.

I guess taking off anti-virus might have broken System Restore. Is there
any way to get it back other than reinstalling Vista?

The machine was purchased by mail order and I'd sooner try and fix the
problem than send it back and wait for weeks for it to come back.

I doubt if removing the AV broke System Restore. It was probably Norton or
McAfee, both of which are bad ideas. You might want to finish removing:
Norton:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039
McAfee:
http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/displaydoc....egoryId=120919

If System Restore still won't work after that I don't know what else to
suggest.

This had nothing to do with AV (neither Norton or McAfee were installed) but
the fact that there was more than 3GB or RAM!!

I found the solution on Google, have a look at this article. System Restore
is now functioning.

Thank you for trying to help out.

I don't see anything in that article about having more that 3 GB of RAM.
