System restore will not run

I need to do a system restore to return my system to a previous condition.

I click on the beach ball in the lower right corner then do: All Programs
> Accessories > System Tools > System Restore -- then wait and wait and wait

and nothing happens.

However, when I try to start System Restore again, the computer tells me
that the System Restore wizard is already running. If I do Ctrl-Alt-Del and
select Task Manager, it shows no tasks running.

Why is my System Restore not running and what can I do to make it run?

Thanks.

That's what happened -- a few minutes after I posted this plea for help, a
box popped up telling me that system restore was ready to run and asked me
to select a restore point. I did so, waited, then the system told me it
could not restore to that point. I exited it and forgot about it.

Problem is -- I installed a program a couple of days ago and it ran just
fine. Then, I downloaded new USB drivers for the program (it enables me to
program my GPS units from my computer) and after the new drivers were added,
the program will not run -- I get a message that the registry values are
incorrect, please reinstall.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program but that doesn't work.

Oh, well.
