If System Restore is turned off, can you manually save a restore point?

Or, is there a way to create a restore point without having Vista do them
automatically?

If System Restore is turned off, it's off, that's it . . . no auto-saves . .
.. no manual saves . . . no restore points . . . even the ones that were
created before you turned it off are now gone.

Hi Vic--

If SR is off you can't do manual saving. Given space, you can always add
manual restore points. Vista is going to add them automatically, but you
can tweak how often in the registry.

You cannot stop SR from automatically making restore points. Here is a
question and answer similar to that from the Beta Vista SR Chat 6/19/06:

http://blogs.technet.com/filecab/pages/447166.aspx

Is it possible to to set a "just installed" restore point.

This is automatically done whenever a program or driver or update is
installed. Certainly you can create one manually if you don't trust those.
These automatically created restorepoints do have automatically created
names. You cannot change those.

--> can i update this with specific or personalized settings.

If you create one manually you can give it a name. Not more, not less.

Good luck,

CH

But if you turn it on You can make a manual restore point by opening the
application.

Hi Vic Baron,

When System Restore is off, the restore points get deleted and yo
cannot manually make one.

Hi Vic,

When System Restore is turned off, all restore points or shadow copies are
deleted, and no new ones will be created. Previous Versions are also deleted.

System Restore in Windows Vista:
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/vista.html

In Vista, restore points can be created manually, along with the automatic
restore points. The automatic feature cannot be turned off.

What was the reason for turning System Restore off?

Hi,

Number one is false. Settings made to this key in Vista are ignored.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrentVersion\SystemRestore

These keys are there for backwards compatibility with some XP scripts.

Hi Bert,

I will defer to you because you are the expert for System Restore. Do
you have a solution that would work for this in Vista? I see this exact
same solution all over the net for Vista. Are we all mistaken?

Thank you,
Shawn

I've the default Frequency of Automatic System Restore Point (1 day) but I
do not see a restore point every day, I have restore points just during the
last upgrades and the manually created. How is that?
Ciao,
Riccardo

Hi Shawn,

This information was posted by Jill Zoeller [MSFT] in April.
http://snipurl.com/1q2z9

To test the effects of the registry setting, In Vista I set RPGlobalInterval
to 15 minutes, (900) and no new restore points are being created.
