System restore point - long time.

Hello,
I have Windows Vista Home Premium installed in my laptop. Vista is installed
in my C: drive, where all my files are (I didn't do any partition of the
drive).
The process of creating a system restore point (system volume information)
takes a long time, sometimes even 15 minutes and more. While this happens,
the system works much slower, probably due to the extensive use of the hard
drive.
The creation of a system restore point occurs after install / uninstall of a
program, but also seems to occur randomly, without any obvious reason.
Is it normal for this to take such a long time? Is it recommended to turn
the system restore off? Is it possible to control when a system restore point
is created?

I am having the same problem - especially when it is trying to install
updates from windows. It is taking over an hour. I don't think this is
normal. Does anyone have any suggestions?
