I am trying to use system restore to send my HP laptop back to the condition
it was around two months ago. I think there is some sort of virus because I
am having problems with the internet-- constant pop-ups and running very
slow. When I go to choose a restore point there is only listed points as old
as yesterday. I never made any manually; however, all the boxes are checked
under system protection. Is there a way to get older restore points?

If you have a Virus\Malware\Trojan then even by going back as far as you can with restore points it will not solve your issue.

Is there some sort of error that is shown either on the screen or in the Event Viewer ? What happens if you disable all of your Add Ons in IE

Use Avast if you don't already have an anti-virus installed.
And scan your system with Spybot S & D
Info below.

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Avast Anti-Virus is Vista compatible (32bit and 64bit Versions), FREE,
auto-updating, and a low resources user of your computer.
And, only have 1(one) Anti-Virus installed / running on your computer at any
one time..
Conflicts may occur if you have more than 1(one).

http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.5.2 is a very good, FREE Anti-Spyware Program.
Download, install, update, and immunize your System with it.
Then SCAN with it.
Update it, and scan your System once a fortnight.

Important re: Safe Mode
If you happen to find a problem that you can’t uninstall / delete, reboot
the computer, and go into Safe Mode.
To get into Safe mode, tap F8 right at Power On / Startup, and use UP arrow
key to get to Safe Mode from list of options, then hit ENTER.
RESCAN your computer with Avast(or your Anti-virus) and Spybot S & D while
in Safe Mode.
