Hi,

I have automatic creating of system restore points turned on but it does not
save automatically any points. I can create them manually without any problem
though and they are not being deleted. This has been like that since I bought
my brand new computer. I have only Vista OS, no disc cleaners etc.

Any ideas how to get the system create the points automatically?

Check to see if "Task Scheduler" is set to "Automatic" and is
started in Services.

Administrative Tools>Services

Or, type "services.msc" into Start menu's search, press enter.

I checked the task scheduler and it is both set to automatic and started, so
the reason must be somewhere else.

Type or copy/paste "eventvwr.msc" into the search bar, press enter.

Look under Windows Logs>Application, see if you can find any "Warning"
or "Error" that says "System Restore". Especially, the !Error events. Those
could be preceded by other warnings, maybe for "VSS".

While you're there, look under Windows>System, too.

This may help narrow the problem down.

Yes, there are error and warning events that repeat almost everday. 2 types
of error events from System Restore and one type of warning from VSS. I copy
those 3 types below. I diddn't find anything warning under "system" logs
searching by "restore" and "vss" keywords.
I checked the web on that without any results which would help me with my
level of technical knowledge, so any help is much appreciated

Who makes your computer? What's the specific model?

It's Sony Vaio VGN-TZ150N with Vista Business 32 bits on OEM licence. I
bought it in the US but stay now in Europe and my warranty does not work
here, which is a huge pity taking into account amount of troubles I am
experiencing and time it consumes to get it work properly.

Have you tried turning off System Restore?

Type "sysdm.cpl" into the search bar, press enter.
Go to the "System Protection" tab. Uncheck all
under "Available Disks". You'll get a pop-up window
asking if you "Are sure you want to turn System restore off".
It will be stopped after that and restore points deleted.

Do some disk maintenance. Open up "Computer", right-click
your C drive, Properties, Tools tab. Under "Error Checking",
click "Check Now". A box will appear, there will be two options,
check both. Then you'll get another box that says "Windows can not
check this disk while it's in use", click "Schedule disk check".
Normally, I would only suggest checking "Automatically fix errors",
but just go ahead and check both. The scanning for bad sectors may
take awhile, so be patient.

Reboot. The disk check will start right after you reboot.

Once you are back to your desktop. Force a defrag-
type "cmd" into the search bar, at the very top of the
results you will see "cmd.exe", right-click it and select
"Run as Administrator".

Copy/paste "defrag c: -v -w" into the command window.
This will do a full defrag. By default, Vista defrag will skip
64 MB (or larger) file fragments. With the command you pasted, it
will not. However, the defrag will take longer to complete.
Be patient. If you want to, you can use the command,
"defrag c: -v -r", which is the default for Vista defrag,
it will skip those larger fragmented files, and complete faster.

Once that's done, turn System Restore on.
Only check your C drive (System drive).

Be sure that while your going through these steps that
you "Allow" the action if the UAC nag screen pops up.

None of this may solve your problem. But, at least you will
have a "cleaner" disk.

We can always try something else.

Take care,

Michael

Hi Daissy,

This error (0x800423f4) keep popping up in these events.

This error is caused by a bug in the driver for Intel ICH5R chipset that
results in critical disk 0 not being marked as fixed hard disk. There is no
workaround because. According to Intel, this version is not Windows Vista
compatible: http://support.intel.com/support/chi.../CS-023616.htm

Hi Bert,

I checked my Intel chipset properties and under system devices listing it
says that I have ICH7 Family. I also had a look at requirements for Intel
Matrix Storage Manager which say that I would have to have some Intel storage
controller installed, and the only storage controller I have is from
Microsoft iSCSI Initiator. But I am not sure if need this Intel Matrix
Storage Manager at all, on the websit it says it is not required for
standalone SATA hard drivers, but I dont know how to check what kind of drive
I have.

If it is not the bug in ICH5, than maybe there is a workaround?

Regards,
