system restore points

I install updates one at a time, over a period of days or even weeks. I've noted that each and every time I install an update to my computer, do the required restart, when checking system restore after reboot, it has effectively wiped out all restore points, save the one that Microsoft installs before installing patch.

I've checked all maintenance programs to be sure it is not they that are doing it, but they all check out fine. Is there any explanation for this behavior? Is this a new property of updates, or is something amiss in my operating system? I've visited suggested MVP system restore sites, have visited sites suggested in searches concerning system restore, and have performed all the tasks suggested, yet it seems that the update process alone is what is erasing all my restore points.

If I don't do any update or system patches, the restore points are left alone, and continue to show all points of reference during the 90 days until they begin auto delete themselves.

In checking my Restore settings, C Drive is a full 28603 MB and slider is slid all the way to the right. F drive is 39MB, slider closer to minimum. F drive was the partition Dell put in for a basic restore at the factory. I don't use it. Could F partition be part of the problem?

There is one problem I've never been able to fix. When the System Properties menu is open, under User Profiles, there is XPS\ Administrator which is 1.47MB, and then there is XPS\my name......with 3.52GB. I am the one and only user of this computer so I'm the administrator too. Back in April when the WGA tool was being forced as critical download, I refused to allow it into my machine. I went to window's update page to try and obtain updates, and met with another attempt at forced WGA tool installation to proceed, I clicked out of that menu, and at the bottom of the page, they gave instruction as to how to change settings to Administrator to access site. I did what they told me to do, and still was unable to access update site without the copy of WGA tool being installed first. I opted out , attempted to return to original setting of XPS\my name. It refuses to change back to the original setting. It will allow me to highlight it, I will click ok, but when looking back and re opening the page, it has returned to the Administrator setting. Since I also am the Administrator, I figure, its working ok so leave it alone. Could this be part of the problem? and if so, can I delete the administrator setting altogether? I've been afraid to do so.

The PC-cillen is Trend Micro 12. It came with the machine and the subscription was for 15 months. It will run out in February of 2007

The Hard drive is only 9% full, a full 211GB is available on C, my primary drive.

Suggest, if there are no issues with the latest round of updates, that
you Turn off system restore on all Drives, then reboot the system.
Reenable it on C:\ *only* after restarting and set it to around 1 GB.

That particular version of Trend should have no adverse effects on SR.
IIRC, the Dell "hidden restore" partition is around 5 GBs.
If you do not intend to use it to restore the system to factory settings
( and who would want to do that ? , suggest using 3rd party
partitioning software, such as Acronis Disk Director, Partition Magic,
BootNG, Diskkeeper, etc. to reclaim the disk space and merge it with C:\
There are also free partition tools. Just go to Google, type in
"partition software", click Google Search.

I've opted out of WGA too, and now get my MS updates from Shavlik.com.
It's free if you have under 10 computers. The interface takes a bit
of getting used to -- mainly Shavlik.com deploys updates to large
organizations. The updates are the same as MS. It can scan, tell you
which ones are needed, download them, install them. You have choices
for each stage. I let it scan, then choose which to DL, and then
later install them after I've read the newsgroups.

I go over to http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/index.html and read thru the patches available and take what I need. No hassle, no extra program needed to access updates, and it provides a usually understandable description of each update from which I can make the decision as to wanting it or not.Like Shavlik, the updates are the same as MS. It just doesn't scan and tell you if you need them or not.

Thank you for your suggestion. I have done what you suggested. I'll wait a few days until I try another update and if it zaps my restore points again, I'll report back. Thank you for your help.

Just got done reinstalling Windows Media Center V.2002 w/SP2 and about
59 updates came down from AU, all installed fine, with no adverse results.
Of course, the AV wasn't installed until afterwards, just to be on the
safe side.

I'll take a look at that site. I like Shavlik, though, because it
DOES scan and tell me which updates are needed. Then I read about
them before deciding whether to install.

I just which there was a more user-friendly security bulletin format
at MS.

No hassle, no extra program needed to access updates, and it provides a usually understandable description of each update from which I can make the decision as to wanting it or not.Like Shavlik, the updates are the same as MS. It just doesn't scan and tell you if you need them or not.
