Will System Restore undo SP2?

If we install SP2, and encounter problems, will System
Restore undo the SP install? I have auto-updates on all
our XP machines. Has any testing been done on this from
Microsoft?

If one wishes to uninstall SP2, one would open the
"Add or Remove Programs" applet in Control Panel,
place a check next to "Show Updates", scroll down
to SP2 and uninstall it. This is the preferred method
for uninstalling SP2.

As a precaution, SP2 automatically creates a Restore
Point prior to installing, but using System Restore
to return a computer to a pre-SP2 state is not the
best method.

Yes, and it does it brilliantly because it creates a restore point for you
automatically during the installation of SP2. Of course you may not be able
to boot after installing SP2 which means system restore won't help :-( But
there are workarounds for that also such as starting system restore from a
command line or doing a repair setup from the cd.

Bottomline is that you should be doing full backups prior to making any
major changes to your operating system such as a service pack. Don't rely
on the built-in system restore capabilities alone. A third-party option
such as Ghost will give you more insurance against a total o/s and file
system meltdown.

If you wish to uninstall SP2, create a Windows Restore
point before installing (even save a copy of the registry)
and install SP2 with the backup option.

If you need, uninstall using Add/Remove programs option
and then run System Restore if you still want to be on the
safe side. The best option however might be to use an
Image created (before SP2) either with Ghost 2003, Drive
Image 7 or Acronis TrueImage. They all are cool programs
for this.

You can start recovery console
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp

says how to install it or start it from the systems cd and
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;307545

says how to use it to restore to an earlier restore point.

Well I want to uninstall SP2 because of longer boot times and Explorer
problems since installation but get the message "UPnP User Interface and
Windows XP Hotfix KB834707" may not run correctly if uninstalled." (!)
Now what does one do?

Uninstall KB834707, then SP2.
