System Restore monitors 'file types'. Usually your personal folders and
files are not touched during a restore. However, if any of the monitored
file types are present in your personal folders, these can be deleted or
replaced with a previous version, depending on what the state of those files
were when the restore point was created.
Example: Files with the extension .EXE are in the Monitored file types list.
You have downloaded a program to your C:\Users\your name\Downloads folder
and this program is an .EXE file. If you run System Restore and go back to a
date before the file was downloaded, that .EXE file will be removed.
See this website for more details.
