I am so tired of the crap I'm getting from microsoft. I ask this question
and no one helps, I go to start an email support and it tells me my ID is
invalid. I call microsoft up to get another activation number and go back to
start an email support and it still tells me I have an invalid number. Plus
the number that is listed in the system folder is an OEM number and the
number on the bottom of my laptop is completely different. I tried both
those numbers and it said it was invalid, that is why I called microsoft and
that number is no where to be found and it still says it's invalid.

I will not pay for support, I will not buy vista either. If I have to I
will buy a MAC. I will just live with the error. I will not call support
either for 2 reasons, one it would take too long to go through the problem,
and 2 I'm tired of getting these foreign people on the phone whom I can't
understand, I have to strain to hear and understand what their saying.

John,

If you already had the product key number installed on Vista, then this
will show you how to see it from within Vista.

Have you tried doing a phone activation?

Hope this helps you,
Shawn

HELLO............ that's what I just said. The product number on the laptop
and the number on the bottom of the laptop are different. I tried both of
those to get through email support and it said it was invalid. I then CALLED
microsoft to ACTIVATE vista again and email support still said the number was
invalid. Don't you people read right, or maybe your reading every other word.

You need to talk to whomever sold you the laptop with bogus numbers. No
one here can solve that problem.

okay the number on the bottom of the laptop is the product key, the number
microsoft asks for in the email support is the product ID. Here is a photo
of what I get, http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/5/...40/sshot-1.jpg

The product ID is not the same as the product key. To find your product key
right click computer and properties and it should be there.

I know Jim that's what I said, the number on the bottom is the product key
and the number that's in the picture is the product ID. Microsoft is telling
me that product ID (the picture) is invalid.

Hello John,

Your Product ID is correct, but as it is an OEM installation, any product
support has to be obtained through the OEM, ie Gateway, Dell. Per their
agreement with Microsoft, the OEM has the responsibility for all support,
and that is the reason that your Product ID will show as "invalid" on the
Microsoft support site.

If Vista was pre- installed on your laptop (oem) then support comes from the
manufacturer, not Microsoft.
