System stops after kb927978 autoupdate

My customers Acer laptop (XP Pro SP2) stops responding after logging in - he
did not record the error message after the kb927978 XMSL update this week.
The screensaver still kicks in after a while.
Same lack of response in Safe Mode, the only access I have with the laptop
is via Safe Mode Command Prompt.
I can access the XMSL Log file on the drive from my test PC if that is of
use.
