I have windows update set to:
"Download updates bu let me choose when to install them"
Updates are download ok but after a short time the notification icon
dissapears from the system tray. (a problen if I am not at the PC when the
updates are downloaded)

(NB the icon is not hidden. It is not there at all)

The option to "Shutdown and install updates" is still available but this
does not allow me to choose which updates I wish to install

Any help would be apreciated

Reboot and the balloon should reappear and you'll be able to choose.

Thanks Alias~- I apreciate you posting.

Your sugestion does work but doesn't really answer my question.
I was hoping somone out there would have a fix to stop the tray icon
vanishing in the first place.

Anyway thanks again for the quick response

Which OS? E.g. in XP Pro I have two settings associated with this
under Taskbar and Start Menu Properties. First there's a checkbox:
Hide inactive icons. Then, if that's checked there's a Customize Notifications
dialog in which I have modified the Behavior of the AU icon to be
Always show.

Also, of course, there is only an icon to show if wuauclt.exe is executing.
If that process was terminating prematurely I'd try diagnosing it with FileMon
e.g., filtering with SoftwareDistribution;update;wuau;CatRoot
The second term would be intended to capture writes to the WindowsUpdate.log
